湄洲岛(cn)China / Fujian / Putian island[湄洲岛]位于湄洲湾湾口的北半部，现辟为国家旅游度假区。这是一个南北长9.6公里，东西宽约1.3公里，面积约16平方公里的小岛。全岛林木蓊郁，港湾众多，岸线曲折，沙滩连绵，风景秀丽。环岛优质沙滩长达20多公里，可建海滨浴场；还有6千余亩防风林带，是理想的度假胜地。岛域盛产石斑鱼，乃鱼中之珍品，远销港澳。 湄洲湾东南临台湾海峡，与宝岛台湾遥遥相望。因处海陆之际，形如眉宇，故称湄洲。岛上妈祖闻名海内外。妈祖原名林默娘（公元960-987年），因她出生至满月从不啼哭，父亲给她取名曰“默”。她自幼出聪明，8岁能诵经，10岁能释文，13岁学道，16岁踩浪渡海，经常在海上抢救遇险渔民。宋雍熙四年九月初九，林默娘二十八岁时，辞别家人，在湄洲岛湄屿峰归化升天。为了纪念她，当年人们就在湄洲峰“升天古迹”旁立庙奉祀，尊她为海神灵女、龙女、神女等。宋徽宗时封妈祖为“顺济夫人”，这是朝庭对妈祖的首次褒封。以后历代朝廷还敕封她“天妃”、“天后”、“天上圣母”等尊号。 湄洲岛是妈祖的故乡，这里的妈祖庙尊称为“天后宫湄洲祖庙”。此庙创建于宋雍熙四年（公元987年），即林默娘逝世的同年，初仅数椽；后经历代扩建，日臻雄伟。明代著名航海家郑和七下西洋，回来奏称：“神显圣海上”，于第七次下西洋之前奉旨来到湄洲岛主持特御祭，扩建庙宇。清康熙统一台湾，将军施琅奏称：“海上获神助”，又奉旨大加扩建。目前，妈祖庙已修茸一新，雕新画栋，金碧辉煌，成为全世界华籍海员顶礼膜拜和海内外同胞神往的圣地。妈祖庙、天妃宫、天后宫遍布我国台港澳地区及大陆各海口码头、内河岸埠，还分布到东南亚和日本、朝鲜、印度、美国、法国、丹麦、巴西、阿根廷等世界17个国家，必乎是有华人处就有妈祖信仰。在台湾就有大大小小的妈祖庙5000多座，妈祖信徒有1400多万。还有以之妈祖庙5000多座，妈祖信徒有1400多万。还有以之为地名的，如天津的天妃闸、福建的马（妈）祖岛、台湾澎湖马公（妈宫）、澳门原名妈阁等。每逢农历三月二十三日妈祖生日，庙宇内外，人山人海，香火鼎盛。 湄洲祖庙庙后岩石上，有“升天古迹”、“观澜”等石刻。站在石上，顾盼茫茫大海，白鸥掠波，舟揖穿梭；水中有山，山外有海，山海相衔，海天相接。庙前岩岸海床有大片辉绿岩，受风涛冲蚀，形成天然凹槽，潮汐吞吐之声，由远而近，初似管弦细响，继如钟鼓齐鸣，再若龙吟虎啸，终则象巨雷震天，骤雨泻地。扣人心弦的“湄屿潮音”因而驰名。 湄洲岛辟为国家旅游度假区后，香港力宝集团负责用20年时间投资19亿美元对该岛进行成片开发，力争把该岛建设成为亚太地区乃至世界一流的朝圣度假圣地。
