嘉峪關(cn)China / Gansu / Jiayuguan china, historic, wall, edifice, interesting place, ----建於明洪武五年（公元一三七二年），位於「河西走廊」中段的「嘉峪關」，既是舉世聞名的萬里長城西端險要關隘，也是至今保存最完整的一座中國古代軍事防禦建築。 明太祖洪武五年，「征虜將軍」馮勝選擇九眼泉西北坡築嘉峪關土城，爾後又陸續修築，益形鞏固，素有天下雄關」及「長城主宰」之稱。嘉裕關內城門內北側，各有馬道門樓一座，進入車樓以後，還闢設一條寬闊筆直的斜坡式磚鋪「馬道」直達城頂。 嘉裕關為萬里長城西端的起點，此地是東西交通史上「絲綢之路」的重要孔道，自古為兵家必爭之地。 秦漢以來，中國歷代王朝無不在此修關設防，留下許多的古跡和珍貴文物，如魏晉彩繪壁畫、黑山岩石刻畫等。 登臨「天下第一雄關」，窮目遠眺連綿起伏的祁連山，遙想歷代「金戈鐵馬」馳騁沙場效命的豪情，或是「一將功成萬骨枯」、「忽見陌頭楊柳色，悔教夫婿覓封侯」、「何日平胡虜，良人罷遠征」的落寞無奈，不禁令人感慨萬千。 嘉峪關控河西咽喉之地，矗立在北面黑山和南面祁連山脈的文殊山之間十五公里的峽谷上，地勢險要，古稱「河西第一隘口」。 第一層為磚木結構，東西兩面開門，門內安裝扶手木樓閣，可緣梯上樓，第二、三層為木結構，四周木格壁窗，以綠琉璃瓦蓋頂，脊上裝獸形瓦、蟠龍、石獅等。 嘉裕關城樓的建造堅固雄偉、氣勢磅礡。事實上，以巍巍祁連山和茫茫戈壁背景的嘉峪關，被譽「天下第一雄關」，絕非溢美之詞。這座建築雄偉的邊關古城，傲然聳立在一望無際、茫茫旱海之上。 嘉峪關城佈局合理，建築精良，有三重城郭，多道防線，城內有城，城外有槽，形成重城並守之勢。嘉峪城的整體佈局，顯示了古代邊關將士的傑出軍事才能和當時民間精湛高超的建築藝術，以天下雄關傳名古今。嘉峪關的修建，花費了大量人力、物力，能建起如此雄偉的關城，實在不易。 於是，便演繹出了「定城磚」、「冰道運石」、「山羊馱磚」、「擊石燕鳴」等若干扣人心弦的動人故事。 嘉裕關分內外城，內城的東、西各有一「甕城」，將軍府則位於內城裡。甕城取甕中捉鱉之意，設計讓敵人進入後即被困住而插翅難飛。城牆上所見的小城樓稱為「敵樓」，是存放武器和供士兵休息的地方。 嘉裕關有「擊石燕鳴」、「定城神磚」的傳說。關於「擊石燕鳴」的典故，其中有一說是當時士兵的妻子會用石頭敲擊城牆，若發出「唧唧唧」像燕子一樣的聲響，就表示良人（夫婿）必定能平安歸來。 至於「定城神磚」的傳說，是當時主持建造嘉裕關的建築師以精確計算建材聞名，他以項上人頭跟主其事的官吏保證，建關使用的磚頭材料一定事前計算恰如其分。 只不過，等到快竣工時卻剩餘一磚，工匠靈機一動，將磚置於城門之上，無所不用其極地自圓其說，此即為神仙托夢的「定城神磚」，千萬不能拿走，否則嘉裕關將不保。 如此神來之筆般的機智，不但腦袋不必搬家，也連帶使得建城民伕不必再服苦役。
